WVRR Annual Community Awards Criteria

The Willamette Valley Road Runners annually recognize outstanding achievement and contributions in running and/or fitness at its "Awards and Installation Banquet." The selection committee solicits your nominations for these awards in accordance with the following criteria: Please send in the nomination form by December 30!

Ø The Charles J. Bowles Award (for contribution): This award is presented to a person(s) for significant contribution to the field of running over a period of years. Persons involved in general fitness may also be nominated if their contribution involves running. The contributions shall have been performed in such a manner, above and beyond the requirements of one’s vocation, as to reflect unselfish dedication, leadership and inspiration to the field of running and walking in the Salem community.

1. The nominated recipient(s) must have made their contributions over a period of at least two years, unless the significance of the contribution merits a shorter period..

2. The nominee must be a resident of the greater Salem area and contributions must have been made to the benefit of Salem area runners, unless the nominee’s contribution is so significant that one or both conditions could be waived.

3. The contribution shall not be solely financial.

4. The contribution shall not be made as the result of an employment demand on the nominee, nor an individual act for which the nominee receives direct compensation.

5. The contribution shall have made a positive impact on running in the Salem area as a whole, and not solely to the benefit of an individual.

6. The nomination may be submitted by any member of Willamette Valley Road Runners or the community at large, but must be submitted on the official nomination form and contain all the data requested. The selection committee will not consider incomplete nomination forms.

Ø The Phidippides Cup (for achievement). This award is presented to the person(s) whose running performance in the past year represents a personal achievement of such a stature as to deserve the special recognition of the community.

1. The running achievement(s) of each nominee must be documented in such a way as to ensure authenticity.

2. Nominees must be residents of the greater Salem area, except if they are currently enrolled in a college or university.

3. The running achievement(s) must be of such a caliber as to deserve special recognition, not only within the running community, but within the community as a whole.

4. Though the achievement may be for excellence in running performance at a high level of competition, it does not necessarily have to be the case. Personal achievement in overcoming physical limitation or accumulated quality of performance also deserves consideration and recognition as long as it meets criteria # 3 above.

5. The nominee(s) must be of good character and standing so that the recognition reflects positively on the sport of running, the Salem running community, and the community as a whole, and provide an inspiration to others.

6. The nomination may be submitted by any member of the Willamette Valley Road Runners or the community at large, but must be submitted on the official nomination form and contain all the data requested. The selection committee will not consider incomplete nomination forms.
