Running & Walking Club The 2nd annual Great Arbor Day 8K (5 miles) Run/Walk was created by its many sponsors as a way to celebrate the natural resources and beauty of our great Pacific Northwest outdoors. This event will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2000, in the third parking lot of Minto Brown Island Park beginning at 9:00 am. Tree expert extraordinary, Maynard Drawson, is the official race starter. This scenic 8K race will tour the flat chip trails and bike paths that follow the Willamette River. Events following the race will include the planting of a ceremonial tree in honor of Arbor Day 2000 and the presentation of one sapling tree to each participant. Participants will be able to enjoy hot chocolate, cider and bagels while several door prizes are being awarded . The results of the day's events will be posted on Willamette Valley Striders web site, www.wvstriders.org and on the Pheidippides web site www.open.org/prwc. Race day registration and packet pick-ups will begin at 8:00 a.m. in the parking lot. Pre-race registrations must be received by Wednesday, March 27th to guarantee a t-shirt. Make checks payable to: PRWC, P.O. Box 828, Salem, OR 97308. For those participants waiting to register on race day, some t-shirts will be available, but there will be no guarantees of availability. Awards will be presented to the running divisions. The walking divisions are noncompetitive and will not have awards. All runners and walkers will receive a starter tree and be eligible for the raffle. The raffle will include such great items such as running shoes and other accessories. DIRECTIONS :: Take I-5 to exit 253 (Hwy. 22/Mission St.) in Salem, go west on Why 22, continue on Why 22/Mission St. to Commercial St., turn left, travel 2 blocks and turn right on Owns St. (this will turn into River Rd. South), follow to Minto Brown Island Park-on right.
