just passed on some interesting information regarding the long awaited project of linking the downtown parks (Riverfront, Wallace Marine, and Minto-Brown Island) with pedestrian/bicycle pathways and bridges. US Representative Darlene Hooley will be making a stop in Salem on Wednesday morning (9/5/07) to unveil her upcoming Willamette River United Act, a bill designed to help Oregonians reconnect to the Willamette River.  Her Salem stop will be focused on the Minto Island and the Union Street Railroad bridge projects which would be eligible for funding under the bill.   Be there to show your support if you can, and encourage as many others as possible to come too.  You can read more about the legislation in the press release section of Rep. Hooley's website, http://hooley.house.gov/ and send her a message.   Voice your support for this project!
GFR's website includes information from 2003-2005 outlining some of the early stages of this project:  http://www.activesalem.com/bridge.php

mdaly.jpg (15296 bytes)11/14 - HELP KEEP THE RESTROOMS AT MINTO BROWN PARK OPEN !! Read Statesman Journal Article. Due to a lack of funds, the City of Salem will no longer maintain the restrooms at Minto through the winter. We all pay taxes, and maybe the City could find some money somewhere, but the reality is unless we chip in with some cash there will be no pottie relief at Minto. Jacqueline Zimmer is spearheading the effort to solicit donations to "assure you a seat at the Park!". We need to raise $1,500 to open and maintain two of the porta-potties for use now through February 2004, and we need to raise it quickly. Several local businesses have already generously contributed, including Gallagher Fitness Resources and the Governor's Cup Coffee House. So please send a check, no matter how small to Minto Brown Restrooms, Parks Tradition Fund, City of Salem, 555 Liberty St SE, Salem, OR 97301. For more info call Jacqueline at 503-551-2328 or email jzimmer@o4ad.org. Our thanks to Jacqueline for spearheading this effort !!

5/31 - As you may have noticed, this web site was down most of the week. Sorry about that, our ISP, Open.org took longer than anticipated to migrate to their new servers. Within a few days this website will be moving to a commercial web host, and, if I do my job right, you won't notice a thing, except, possibly, some faster page loads.     1/3 - Been getting virus infected emails lately?
- you shouldn't always blame the person that sent you the email, because maybe they didn't. A common virus "Klez", is kinda sneaky, it looks at the infected host's address book, sends infected emails, and randomly chooses the sender's name from the same list, thus hiding the source of the email. If you're hooked into the internet, please do your friends a service and buy a virus protection program, and keep it updated. Also make sure you keep your Windows patches up to date, as many of them correct newly found security flaws. More info on Klez Virus protection programs - McAfee  Symantec

- quite a few of our club members (myself included) use AT&T's broadband internet service - in a few months our email addresses will be switching yet again - from @attbi.com to @comcast.net. AT&T does not currently have any info or FAQ's on their website covering the change, so if you have any info stored in your personal web spaces (as I do) I suggest that you back it up to your local drive as last time AT&T switched (from @Home) it all got flushed down the drain. - today is the first day of our new club, merged from the two former Salem Running Clubs, Pheidippides Running & Walking Club and the Willamette Valley Striders. Wondering if you're a member of the new club?? - if you were a paid up member of Pheidippides or the Striders, then your membership has carried forward to the new club. If your membership has lapsed, then you will need to pay some dues to continue your benefits in the new club (look at the mailing label on the Oct-Dec '01 newsletter, if it has RENEWAL DUE on the top line, then you be lapsed). There will be a mailing shortly (note - mailed Jan 8th), to all current and lapsed members of Pheidippides and the Striders explaining who owes what dues and when, so stay tuned...............
